This is the difficult question I'm often asked, and the answer is no easier to stomach. If you die without a Will, then the law decides who gets what, how, and when. Known as dying "intestate," your estate would be distributed according to "intestacy rules," which favours married or civil partners and some close relatives. Concerningly, unmarried partners have no automatic right and in the case of no surviving relatives, the Crown benefits from your estate.
